early airships
helium and hydrogen???

in the early 1900s hydrogen gas was used to inflate airships after on large ship crashed and caught on fire teh helium gas began to be used to inflate air ships .why was helium preffered over oxygen?

Air is mostly nitrogen.

According to the ideal gas law, at the same temperature and pressure, all gases have the same volume for a number or moles.

One mole of nitrogen weighs around 28 grams, while one mole of oxygen weighs around 32 grams. Thus, it can be said that oxygen is more dense than air, and won’t provide any lift.

One mole of hydrogen weighs 2 grams, and one mole of helium weighs 4 grams. Thus, as you can see, hydrogen has half the density of helium, and thus provides more lift.

Methane is also lighter than air, but doesn’t provide nearly as much lift as helium or hydrogen,

In October of 1910, only four years before the outbreak of WWI, the precursor of the U.S. Air Force had one plane and a couple of dirigibles. Nobody knew which form of flight would predominate: planes, dirigibles, or balloons. And for a period of 17 days that month, this question was on prime display. The dirigible America, captained by Walter Wellman, was trying to cross the Atlantic. At horse ra…
